March Gardeners Calendar
- March is the time of year that things start to come alive again in the yard. It can also be a frustrating month with cold and snow. Needless to say spring is coming.
- Start Seeds of some annuals like verbena,
snapdragon and salvia.
You can also start cool weather vegetables in the colder zones and warmer vegetables in warmer climates.
Late in the month, those plants that can take a cold night or two can be planted outside. Pansies are a good example of this.
Prune summer blooming shrubs now. I prune back the rose of Sharon 1/3. The more you prune it the bigger the blooms this summer.
Prune fruit trees and shrubs now as well.
Clean-up ornamental grasses. Clip them to the ground before the new growth begins.
Start removing hay, mulch and burlap. Untie shrubs at months end. Remember a heavy wet snow late in March does a lot of damage.
Reapply Deer proofing.
Put up a bird house.
Let snow blower run dry of the gas so that the gas does not sit all summer
