Gardening and Microclimates

You know what plant zone you live in but your plants keep dying even though they are suppose to be hardy.  It might be the microclimate.  Some microclimates can change an area by half or a full zone.

to be colder.  Areas that are protected, near buildings or in cities tend to be in warmer zones.  You can push plants into a warmer zone by moving it close to a building or into a sheltered area.  Conversely, a plant might not survive in a given zone if the area tends to be colder, exposed or faces north.  Next time you are choosing a plant, thing about the zone you are in and the microclimate around your property.
