Want to make your kitchen a safer place? You can without toxic chemicals that may also damage the environment. There is this great inexpensive way to make a wonderful solution with just two common ingredients.
Susan Sumner, a food scientist at
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, worked out the recipe for just such a sanitizing combo. All you need is three percent hydrogen peroxide, the same strength available at the drug store for gargling or disinfecting wounds, and plain white or apple cider vinegar, and a pair of brand new clean sprayers, like the kind you use to dampen laundry before ironing.
Spray a little of each on fruits for veggies and then just rinse away, its that simple. It doesn't matter what order you do it. Rinse well after. Don't worry neither are toxic if some if left on the fruit or vegetable.
As a great bonus, this method can sanitize counters, cutting boards and other surfaces you might be working upon.
In tests run at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, pairing the two mists killed virtually all Salmonella, Shigella, or E. coli bacteria on heavily contaminated food and surfaces. The best idea is to spray one after the other and not mix the two in the bottle. It is 10 times more effective if you do one right after the other.
