The Right Tool Is Critical

Having the correct tool when working in the garden is critical. I can not tell you the number of times I find myself trying to plant with a shovel too small or too big or using a rake that does more damage
to the yard than help.
For example, for spring clean-up you want to use a rake that has some give to it. In other words not a garden rake with steel tongs. This will tend to rip up the lawn and small tender plants. I use that rake in the garden when I want to loosen the soil and I have yet to plant.
There are also ergonomic tools that are available and these can put less stress on your hands, wrists and other joints. Try them.

Finally, keep your tools clean and sharp. You can spread fungus and other plant problems by using dirty tools. If your shears are sharp you will cut and prune with a nice clean cut and not shread plants.
